Central Heating Systems

There are several central heating systems that each comes with their pros and cons. Some of mostly used central heating systems are Furnaces, Boilers, and Heat Pumps.

Furnace

Central furnace is most widely used heating system in Canada. A furnace works by forcing heated air through ducts into your home. Natural gas or other type of fuel is ignited in the burner and the flames heat up a metal heat exchanger. The heat exchanger transfers its heat to the incoming air and the blower fan motor forces the heated air into the ductwork. The combustion products are exhaust out of the building through the flue pipes. As the warm air is blown into each room, the colder air is drawn back into the furnace through the return ducts and the incoming air goes through the same procedure.

A furnace wastes some energy in each heating cycle. Conventional system keeps the exhaust temperature high enough so that combustion products can rise through the chimney and out of the building. Modern furnaces cool down combustion products before exhausting them out, thus, increasing energy efficiency. The conventional furnaces have an efficiency of 70% to 80% whereas the newer state of the art furnaces’ efficiency can be as high as 99%.
